As a first generation immigrant from Scotland, I often grapple in my mind and on paper to find my own "sense of place". After seventeen years in St. Louis I vacillate between a need to belong, a feeling of displacement and an enjoyment of being different, of being the outsider looking in on the dominant culture. Even when I'm writing about other subjects, I think that issues of identity and geography are usually at the heart of what I'm trying to figure out. I had blogged about this as my husband and I traveled through Kansas late last year. How lovely to find others who think about such things. Perhaps finding a community of like-minded people is one of the keys to feeling at home ~ no matter where we live.
